About the Fun Walk

The 2017 Candlelighters Fun Walk is scheduled for Saturday, September 9th at Terry Hershey Park. This Fun Walk is a 3-mile walk and all the funds raised will be used to support families at our Weekend Family Camp – Camp CLIFF; our annual family camp for children with cancer and their families.

Get your family, friends and company involved.  You may participate as a TEAM CAPTAIN, INDIVIDUAL WALKER, or a DONOR.

TEAM CAPTAINS are asked to recruit 10 walkers who are encouraged to raise $100. Each walker is asked to raise $100 through pledges or donations.  Very simply, the more walkers that participate, the more money you will raise.

INDIVIDUAL WALKERS can join the Candlelighters team or walk with friends and family.

Who we are

Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Family Alliance provides emotional, educational and practical support to families of children with cancer.

Candlelighters began in 1989 with two parent support groups from the Texas Medical Center: one at Texas Children’s Cancer Center and one at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Children’s Cancer Hospital. The Texas Children’s Hospital group sought formal incorporation, and in 1992 Candlelighters was legally formed.  In the fall of 1992, they invited the MD Anderson Parent Group to join them and the two organizations merged into one.

Why get involved

In the United States, cancer is the number 1 killer of children by disease. On average, one in every four elementary schools has a child with cancer, and the average high school has two students who have or have had cancer.  Each day 43 children in the United States are diagnosed with cancer. Currently, one in every 330 Americans develops cancer during childhood or adolescence before the age of 20. Childhood cancer occurs randomly and spares no ethnic group, socioeconomic class or geographic region. Candlelighters helps those families who face the devastating diagnosis of childhood cancer.

What does my walk donation support

All of our programs and services are the direct result of the vision that our founding families shared – we have faced childhood cancer and we want to make the journey easier for those who come after us.  In that spirit, Camp CLIFF was developed by those families who started Candlelighters and recognized the need for “family time”. 

The days of a family dealing with childhood cancer are hectic –juggling the typical everyday activities with trips to the hospital or clinic for treatments – financially and emotionally stressful, and filled with ups and downs, leaving little time or money for family outings.  Many camps offer the child with cancer a getaway, but we feel that it is very important for the whole family to come together away from the treatment facilities and their everyday hectic lives. Quality time as a family is essential in their struggle to beat the disease.  The cost to send a camper to camp is approximately $200 and this year we are planning on hosting 250 campers!

When talking to a corporate partner or business that you’d like to work with, here is what they can do:

Sponsor the walk or make a donation
Form a walk team
Walk in honor of children facing childhood cancer
Host a fundraising drive
Jeans Day: Ask your employees to donate $5 in order to wear jeans on Friday
Set up a company fundraising page with departmental teams with awards for the teams who raise the most money.
Create a team to fundraise and walk for the cause or sign-up as individuals.
Offer a portion of proceeds from products sold at your business (example 20% of all drinks sold during September).
